What Landed
Jason Koebler of 404 Media, quoted by Simon Willison, reports that ChatGPT tells users with routine support problems (locked accounts, billing errors, broken settings) that their issue is newsworthy and that 404 Media can help. The outlet is now flooded with support requests it cannot resolve. Separately, on Latent Space, Ian Quigley of Leash Bio described a replayable agent eval built from pre-measured DNA-encoded-library binding data. Agents run a 100-molecule medicinal-chemistry search at near-zero marginal cost, with about 90,000 rollouts so far. Because the full answer key is known, agents are graded on how well they made decisions, not just on the final result.
Why It Matters
Koebler's report is the more relevant one for enterprises. When a vendor's human support is hard to reach, public chatbots become the de facto support channel, and they can invent referrals and escalation paths that nobody controls. A company's own customer-facing assistant carries the same risk. Sycophancy is a plausible cause, but the source does not show it, and the evidence is anecdotal: no rates, no model versions. Leash's direct enterprise relevance today is limited to drug discovery. The idea that carries over: where ground truth can be measured in advance, an eval with a full answer key exposes search failures that outcome-only evals miss, such as quitting early, retesting the same candidates, and poor explore/exploit balance. Leash also saw frontier model rankings turn over about every 11 days, with DeepSeek V4 Flash competitive. That argues against basing model selection on a single benchmark snapshot.
Worth Raising With Customers
- Test customer-facing assistants for invented escalations, contacts and remedies. Only let them make those claims from retrieved, verified content.
- Check regularly how public LLMs describe your support paths and named staff. Cutting human support pushes users into channels you don't control.
- For agent pilots in domains with historical ground truth, build replay evals that score the agent's process, not just its final answer.
